What are cataracts?

The eyes' natural lenses can lose their flexibility and become cloudy to the point of seriously interfering with vision. These cloudy vision obstructions are called cataracts. The word "cataracts" is from the Latin word "cataracta," or waterfall. The whitish appearance of falling, rushing water cascading down a waterfall is what cataracts look like from the point of view of someone with cataracts.

The eye's lens and cornea focus the incoming rays of light. As a cataract develops in the eye's lens, the cataract sufferer's vision gradually gets more and more blurry. Most people have cataracts to some degree by the age of 65, although people who are routinely exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation may be affected by cataracts at a younger age.

How can cataracts be treated?

The treatment for cataracts is to surgically remove them and replace the natural lenses with intraocular lenses (IOLs). Lens replacement has been used for many years and has an excellent success rate. Maumee Eye Clinic offers two advanced IOLs (ReSTOR® and ReZoom®) for our patients with cataracts at our Toledo, Ohio-area office. Both are multifocal lenses that offer most patients the ability to dramatically reduce or even eliminate their dependence on glasses after cataract surgery.

Until recently the replacement lenses following cataract surgery were all monofocal, meaning they provided good vision in a particular range but glasses were required to adjust vision at other ranges. The treatment norm had been an IOL that provides good distance vision, plus glasses (usually bifocals) for middle and near vision.

Multifocal IOLS: ReZoom® and ReSTOR®

A more recent development for restored vision after cataract surgery is the multifocal IOL, which acts like a series of monofocal lenses combined into one and provides focus at several ranges, from distant to near. The vision center of the brain is able to interpret this as a normal, smooth continuum of good vision. Both the ReSTOR® and ReZoom® IOLs accomplish this improved range of vision through a special patented design. ReZoom® and ReSTOR® IOLs have been well received by the patients at our Ohio office.

An ordinary monofocal IOL has a flat, smooth surface. The ReSTOR® and ReZoom® lenses are designed as a series of graduated concentric circles, each providing vision at a particular range. It’s similar to stacking a series of increasingly smaller lenses on top of one another. The thinner outer edge provides distance focus, the thickest central portion provides near focus, and the levels in between provide focus at ranges between the extremes. This concept had been used for years to improve the efficiency of microscopes and telescopes, and is now being applied to lens replacement after cataract surgery. Maumee Eye Clinic, near Toledo, Ohio, is proud to offer this revolutionary technology for our patients with cataracts.

The ReSTOR® lens is similar in design to the stacked lens concept; the ReZoom® has a slightly different design to maximize the collection of light in low-light situations. During your cataracts consultation at our Ohio clinic, either Dr. Weidaw or Dr. Kelly will evaluate your unique vision needs and help you decide which of these multifocal lenses is most appropriate for you. If you are not a good candidate for multifocal lenses, your evaluating doctor may recommend an appropriate solution using monofocal lenses.

Is cataract surgery safe?

Cataract surgery has become one of the safest of all surgeries, due to advances in surgical techniques and technology. Nearly 98 percent of all cataract surgery procedures are completed each year without serious complications, and nearly 1.4 million cataract surgeries are performed each year in the United States alone. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States, and the most frequently performed surgical procedure in Americans over 65 years old.

However, as with any surgical procedure, complications can occur following cataract surgery. For example, bleeding, infection, or glaucoma may develop after this surgery, or the retina may become detached. These are very rare complications. Cataract surgery at our Toledo, Ohio-area clinic has been uniformly safe and effective.

"I recently had multifocal lens implants done on both eyes and I couldn't be more pleased with the immediate results. I had been well-informed about what to expect during the procedure, but I was still surprised how quick the surgery was. I had little or no discomfort before, during or after the surgery. Dr. Weidaw and his team were professional, competent and kind. Best of all, my vision is excellent and I do not plan to wear glasses again for the rest of my life. I highly recommend Dr. Weidaw and his team and have complete confidence in their professional abilities."

A Very Satisfied Patient,
