Imagine opening your eyes in the morning and seeing a clear new day, unaided by eyeglasses or contact lenses. With custom LASIK surgery at Maumee Eye Clinic near Toledo, Ohio, you may be able to free yourself from the hassles of glasses and contact lenses. LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) is a safe, effective option for many people, and Dr. Clark Weidaw and Dr. Kristopher Kelly are committed to providing their LASIK surgery patients with the highest-quality personal care.
We know that the decision of whether to undergo LASIK surgery can be a bit intimidating. Dr. Weidaw and Dr. Kelly are sincerely committed to providing the best in LASIK technology, for your safety and comfort. That’s why IntraLase® technology is the integral component in your LASIK surgery at our Toledo-vicinity office; it provides a tenfold increase in safety and accuracy compared to older LASIK methods.
Millions of people around the world have had LASIK surgery, in part because LASIK can be used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. For any of these vision problems, LASIK reshapes the cornea of the eye to correct the distortion causing the problem.
At Maumee Eye Clinic, we first determine whether LASIK surgery is right for you. We're not interested in being "a LASIK mill." Your vision is too important to us. Your preliminary examination by Dr. Weidaw or Dr. Kelly is very thorough and precise. They'll be able to tell you whether LASIK is an option for you, or whether another eye care procedure would better serve your vision.
IntraLase® has been used successfully on hundreds of thousands of eyes, and at Maumee Eye Clinic we trust this advanced LASIK technology to deliver exceptional results. Our commitment is to perform LASIK surgery that provides outstanding vision outcomes with the greatest level of safety. IntraLase® LASIK surgery for our Ohio and Michigan area patients has achieved highly satisfactory results.
With IntraLase® LASIK surgery, the flap that is made in the eye's cornea is done with a beam of laser light, not a blade. The second step of LASIK is the reshaping of your cornea to correct your vision. When your LASIK surgery is over, the corneal flap is put back into place. The bladeless, computer-guided technology of IntraLase® is 100 percent more accurate than most of the mechanical microkeratomes (hand-held devices with a thin metal blade) that are still used by some surgeons to create a corneal flap.
Because of the extreme accuracy of IntraLase®, many patients who were once ineligible may now be able to have LASIK at our Toledo-area clinic in Maumee, Ohio.
The IntraLase® laser creates a corneal flap from below the surface of the cornea without ever cutting it.
Unlike a microkeratome's blade, which cuts across a cornea to create a corneal flap, the IntraLase® creates a flap from below the surface of the cornea. Ultra fast laser light pulses insert microscopic-size bubbles into a lower layer of the cornea to mark the dimensions of the corneal flap, the beveled (angled) edge of the flap, and the location of the flap's hinge. The laser passes through your cornea; there's no sensation, and no pain.
Dr. Weidaw or Dr. Kelly then lifts the corneal flap to perform the CustomVue™ WaveScan treatment with the VISX excimer laser.
When this treatment is complete, the corneal flap is repositioned very accurately (due to its beveled edge), and within minutes the corneal flap is already being held down on the cornea by natural forces. The surface layer of the cornea (the epithelium) immediately begins to grow over the beveled edge of the flap, sealing it in place. Within days, collagen bonds are formed in the cornea around the flap's edge, sealing the flap permanently.
The whole LASIK surgery takes just minutes. The doctors and staff of Maumee Eye Clinic make sure that you are completely comfortable and relaxed before undergoing any procedure, including Intralase® custom LASIK, at their Toledo-area office.
Dr. Weidaw and Dr. Kelly use only the revolutionary, FDA-approved WaveScan technology for LASIK procedures. WaveScan digital technology was first developed for high-powered telescopes, to reduce the distortions that were seen when looking at very distant objects in space. Now this technology has been adapted to identify and measure imperfections in human eyes — and it does so with 25 times more precision than standard methods.
With the WaveScan, Dr. Weidaw and Dr. Kelly make an extremely detailed "map" of your eyes, including each eye’s shape and any irregularities that could cause problems in your vision.
Every eye is unique, just as a fingerprint is unique. The revolutionary CustomVue™ WaveScan technology works by projecting light into the eye. The beam of light that returns is analyzed and recorded; thousands of measurements are made, very quickly. After each eye is evaluated, the system produces a WavePrint™, which is a "fingerprint" or map of the eye’s topography. With this map, Dr. Weidaw and Dr. Kelly use WaveScan software to design a unique, personalized LASIK surgery plan for each patient. They load the surgical plan directly into the computer that directs the VISX excimer laser used for the surgery.
Thus the custom LASIK surgery performed at Maumee Eye Clinic near Toledo, Ohio is truly "state-of-the-art."
Maumee Eye Clinic is one of very few LASIK surgery centers in Ohio to offer iris registration, an advanced technology providing even more individualized adjustments that improve the outcome of LASIK surgery. Iris registration makes an extremely detailed map of the iris (the colored part of the eye), and this map changes with the shape of the eye. An eye's shape can change when the pupil size changes, and it can differ between when a person is sitting up versus lying down. Iris registration automatically adjusts the LASIK treatment based on these changes, further enhancing the precision of the laser vision correction and thus the quality of vision achieved.
The use of iris registration is yet another confirmation of Maumee Eye Clinic's commitment to Excellence in Vision.
